Traveling is a few-and-far between treat now that I am an adult, but as a child – by the time I was 12 – we had crisscrossed the world a few times over. Some of the more exotic places were the hardest to live in. I remember being in Bangkok and having the local kids tease me on the transit bus yet also play Takraw (small woven wicker ball) with us for hours behind the hotel. Fun for my brother and I but my parents were frantic; we weren’t in the hotel and the staff was madly looking for us. I still marvel that communicate with our new friends didn’t mean sharing a language as that simply did not matter. The universal bond being our age and enthusiasm.
My parents raised my brother and I to be adventurous and curious about the world – and we had plenty of opportunity to try many things. I would have to say the most exotic treat would be the dining on kangaroo in Australia. Not my favorite as a 9 year old child and it rather makes me squeamish to think about it today.
The most intriguing foods I like center around spicy curries and sweet and hot blends of sauces or even coffee drinks. Back when I was a child I would try whatever my father was having… because it was usually generally tasty even though half the time I might not have any idea what it was. That was the fun part – I could try a taste and decide for myself.
These photos are from my trip to Thailand. The store was jam packed full of plastic-ware and just made me cringe. Not a fan of plastic. The other photo is one you could see in almost any other country than America; a laden down pickup truck with at least 15 people riding in it! Both of these photos make me grateful for a daily commute which entails a short bike or car ride to my day job and a lovely lunch from my (no plastic allowed) fabulous shiny stainless steel tiffin.

Thanks, that wasvery interesting. Actually,I was born in Thailand in the 1970s but my parents fled and came here in Britain. Truthfully, I didnt care much about my Thai heritage until my mother died recently, now I’ve been trying to find out as much as I can. Seemed like food was as good a place as any to start from! Anyway, I found a lot of thai food recipes here that your readers might be interested in too.
